Like
many family-owned companies, Visual Products, Inc. built its business
on the strength of relationships and a strapping work ethic. A great love
for “making things” drew Carroll Breed, Jr. into manufacturing
and eventually a position as plant manager for a binder company in New
York. He moved into a sales position with the same company in North Carolina
and when the entrepreneurial spirit took hold, Carroll and several partners
began Visual Products in 1967 as a binder manufacturing company devoted
to excellence. Within a few years the partners had been bought out and
the company was entirely family-owned. In an era where family-owned companies
were usually destined to be father & son-owned, Visual Products became
Carroll & Jean Breed and daughters.
Youngest daughter,
Gail, literally grew up in the company, spending school snow days, afternoons
and weekends with her parents in the office & plant. Beginning as
a young assistant, she quickly took responsibility for shipping and inventory,
gained hands-on experience in all areas of the business and officially
joined the company in 1978. Oldest daughter Marsha arrived at Visual Products
in 1984 and like other family members, she learned by doing – everything
that needed to be accomplished. Honoring their parents’ vision for
the company and embracing the strong work ethic instilled in all who work
here, the sisters have successfully piloted Visual Products into its second
generation of leadership.
Today, Visual
Products, Inc. is women-owned and family operated. Gail Wright, president
and Marsha Talton, vice-president, lead Visual Products’ endeavors
with the active involvement of their mother, Jean Breed. Gary Wright is
the plant manager. Lines between roles are often transparent, since all
family members are engaged in building the success of the business. Relationships
are key to this success – family and employee relationships inside
the company and strong customer relationships across the country.
The company
remains headquartered in the heart of the Piedmont Triad with offices
and manufacturing operations in High Point, North Carolina. Although Carroll
Breed passed away in 1996, his love for making products of exceptional
quality and reputation for giving excellent service lives on in the endeavors
of his wife and daughters.
